Putting many of the OBD1 ECM's into serial data mode isn't suposed to change how the car runs but it often does. If the engine starts running correctly when you put it in factory test mode, it sounds like it must be some sensor that is ignored in the test mode, but used in the normal mode that causes your poor running. I assume it is a way that they can check the engine and all its sensors before putting the car on a trailer to be sold at the dealership. I know that in Serial Data mode the engine runs just like it would in Normal mode, but now the ECM is spitting out all the data that it takes in from all the sensors, scan tools read this data and show it to you.ģ.9k is sometimes called the "factory test mode". At least, it is this way with stock 2.8 engines. The idle should slow down, and then you can set your timing. When you put your car in diagnostic mode it should run differently. There are four different modes the ECM runs in: "Field Service Mode" is definitely doing something more than "ALDL Mode". But when I connect A/B with a 3.9K ohm resistor, the improvement is startling!
